From guiding teenagers to helping seniors

Sam Dando volunteers at Southhaven Aged Care in Padstow Heights

Volunteering for me has only happened since I retired from full-time employment in education seven years ago. I spent nearly 40 years assisting teenagers to prepare for their futures and now perhaps it’s time to help the retired folk at the other end of the time scale in some small way.

Both Julie and I have had relatives in Southhaven many years ago (Stella Dando, Harry and Vida Ackerman of Ackerman’s Leap fame) so our association goes back to its foundations.

I’m not crafty or arty or good at making coffee, but I can deliver short devotional sessions on Thursdays, with Julie creating the technological marvel of a devotional video. We do readings and songs/hymns around a theme and focus everyone’s attention to the photos and words on the screen. The residents seem to love it and can often join in with their comments, as well as appreciating the spiritual lessons.

We just do our little bit without fuss.
